After raising layers and selling eggs during her first season as a farmer, Sacramento-area farmer Linda Easton became discouraged about the low profit margins on a dozen eggs. So she started again, this time raising quail for eggs and meat, creating a hatching rental program for families and teachers, and piloting a community rooster program where unwanted/illegal backyard roosters are used to provide culturally appropriate food for local families. This presentation is for farmers and ranchers interested in exploring unconventional, profitable poultry enterprises. Attendees will learn about three poultry businesses and gain insights about the costs, revenue potential, opportunities, and challenges associated with each.
